Week 5: Artist and Artist Era
For my project I chose Mark Newman and the era of hyperrealism. Mark Newman is an American sculptor born in 1962. As of today, he has 20 years of sculpting experience and has sold his work in many stores such as Hallmark, Bowen Designs, Department 56 and more. He’s also created bronze statues for Stanford University.
Mark spends much of his time in his studio making his hyper realistic sculptures and although he has many different styles, he is mostly recognized for his collaboration with Thomas Blackshear, both of them worked on a sculpting line called “Ebony Visions”
I think Mark Newman really fits into this hyperrealism era because his sculptures offer variety while looking freakishly real. He doesn't have a specific style of sculpting because he sculpts just about everything from cartoon characters to real people.
I chose this era because it's very fascinating how artists, more specifically Mark can evoke certain emotions within the viewers.
I personally chose this era because I like how people can make ordinary things into extraordinary things. I love how people can make things look so real and give you the alive feeling and I think Mark does a perfect example of this.
