Week Two; Art History & Appreciation Discussion
Welcome back to week two of my Art History and Appreciation Discussion, today we will be discussing Kentridge and Fast and how they fit in as art makers.
I personally feel as if there is no standardized way an artist has to follow, when you look back in history all artists have their own concept and aesthetic, no two artists are the same. Fast has found a way to portray his feeling through short clips of people talking and Kentridge has a style that isn't perfect and has very little to no color. I think most people when they see Kentridge's art may not think that its art because it probably won't make sense to them, But Kentridge said himself that his job is to draw not make sense and this is true for all artists, creativity has no limit and most times it doesn't make sense. Whereas Kentridge's art doesn't make much sense Fast's creations are literally telling you what he's thinking from small bits of clips. Most people wouldn't consider this art because hes taking clips from other people and putting them together. I would say although this is true, it is art because not only hes creating something new out of it but hes appealing to a lot of people who probably feel or think the same way he does.
They both bring a sense of modernism to the art world. For example, Kentridge's drawings aren't perfect, and he acknowledges this, he knows some of his art doesn't make sense. Fast's compilations bring modernism because a lot of people are interested in watching compilations, he also conveys messages with his audience through the clips which I would say is also modern and I can also argue that they are making ordinary things into extraordinary things.
Kentridge takes bits of random things and turns it into something you can't look away from and Fast's clips convey messages that resonate with you.
